Here’s something you may not know about sharks: they have really interesting eyes. Shark corneas have special reinforcing fibers that work like “rebar” in concrete. These fibers strengthen the cornea and prevent it from swelling and turning cloudy, like human corneas can do.
Scientists are studying shark corneas to learn how to better treat human corneal disease. And in fact, shark corneas have been successfully used for human corneal transplants!
So if you’re curious about what it’s like to peer into the eyes of a great white, you might not need to venture into the cold depths of the ocean. The next person you see walking down the street might be peering back at you with shark eyes…
