September is Sports Eye Injury Prevention Month!

Sports Eye Injury Prevention

We love sports – playing them has many benefits – but it’s important to be safe. Every year, there are more than 40,000 sports-related eye injuries in the US – that’s more than 100 per day!

More than 90% of these injuries can be prevented. Wear sports protective eyewear. And please, NEVER wear regular glasses or sunglasses during sports, as these can shatter and cause serious injuries to your eyes.

Sudbury Eye Care is an authorized Sports Injury Prevention Center. We carry a complete line of prescription and nonprescription sports protective eyewear for children and adults. Come visit us – and keep your eyes safe.Sports Eye Injury Prevention

Who’s Got Shark Eyes?

shark eye cornea transplant

Who’s been or is headed to Cape Cod this summer? If you’ve been anywhere near the Cape, then thoughts of this magnificent creature – the shark – have probably crossed your mind.

Here’s something you may not know about sharks: they have really interesting eyes. Shark corneas have special reinforcing fibers that work like “rebar” in concrete. These fibers strengthen the cornea and prevent it from swelling and turning cloudy, like human corneas can do.

Scientists are studying shark corneas to learn how to better treat human corneal disease. And in fact, shark corneas have been successfully used for human corneal transplants!

So if you’re curious about what it’s like to peer into the eyes of a great white, you might not need to venture into the cold depths of the ocean. The next person you see walking down the street might be peering back at you with shark eyes…

Eye Allergies? How to Prevent and Treat Red, Itchy, Puffy, Irritated Eyes During Allergy Season

woman-flowers-allegies

Achoo!

Welcome to fall allergy season. Weed pollen levels are officially “High” in the Boston Metrowest as of yesterday. For many people, allergy season means itchy, irritated eyes. If you suffer from allergies, there are a couple of things you can do:

1. Wash your face frequently, to remove excess pollen.

2. Limit exposure to allergens. Watch the pollen forecast, and be careful especially on High and Very High days.

3. Wash your bedding (especially pillow cases) frequently.

4. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Since cleaning stirs things up, consider leaving the cleaning to others – but keep the house clean and dust/pollen free.

5. Talk to your physician about allergy treatments. There are several over-the-counter medicines and homeopathic treatments that can help with overall alergy symptoms.

6. For itchy eyes, red eyes, puffy eyes, and other eye-specific symptoms, come to Sudbury Eye Care. There are several available treatments – such as antihistamine eye drops or steroid eye drops – that can often provide significant relief from eye allergies.

Flex spending deadline? Get your glasses, contacts, and eye exam today!

If your company offers a flex spending benefit, then you know these can be a great way to save money on health care.  Flex accounts allow you to set aside money on a pre-tax basis, and then use it to pay for medical goods and services that, for many people, would not otherwise be tax deductible.

Flexible spending plans can save you a lot of money – as long as you use them.  The most important rule to remember is that, once you have set aside money for a given year, those funds are use it or lose it for that calendar year.  So make sure you check your flex balance before the year ends!

If you do have flex dollars to spend, a great way to use them is for vision care.  Do you need an eye exam?  Will you need contacts in the near future?  Could you use a new pair of glasses (or new lenses for your current glasses)?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, don’t wait – schedule an appointment with Sudbury Eye Care today.  We have opened up special hours on Friday December 23, Saturday December 24 (Christmas Eve), and Saturday December 31 (New Year’s Eve) to accomodate last minute patients.  However, space is filling up quickly so don’t delay – book your appointment today, and make sure you get the most out of your flex spending!

We wish you happy holidays and a prosperous new year!

Free Children’s Vision Screenings at Jam Time

Being able to see the world clearly is critical to your child’s healthy development. However, it is easy for parents – and even pediatricians – to overlook vision problems in young children. As result, many children don’t get the help they need until their vision problems are already affecting their learning, playing, or behavior.

On Tuesday, May 7, we will be offering Free Vision Screenings for preschool-age children (ages 2-1/2 to 5) at Jam Time in Maynard, MA. Screenings will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. There’s no need for appointments – just sign up at the door, and your children can play while they wait. Please note that while the screenings are free, you will still need to purchase admission to Jam Time.

Jam Time is located at
86 Powder Mill Road
Maynard, MA 01754
